A new concept in IGA stores has launched in Sydney, catering for a customer base of inner-city dwellers and people seeking gourmet foods, grocery and supermarket shopping.

The new store called IGA Marketplace, replaces the IGA Darlinghurst on Oxford Street, and features a vast selection of more than 11,000 grocery products, with a heavy emphasis on fresh and gourmet foods, coupled with a full service delicatessen and cafŽ.

The 974 sq m outlet is a break from the traditional IGA store; set over two levels the outlet will be open from 6am to midnight, seven days a week.

This contemporary concept will be rolled out across greenfield sites and former IGA and FranklinsÕ sites around Sydney, following the successful IGA Marketplace model created by IGA Greenslopes in Brisbane.

The IGA Marketplace stores are a joint venture between IGA owner The Hopper Group and supplier to IGA outlets, Metcash Ltd.

Silvestro Morabito, chief operating officer of Metcash, said “IGA Marketplace is a concept which addresses the rapidly changing tastes and habits of grocery shoppers, who are seeking flexible shopping hours, convenience, high quality and fresh products.

“The new operation also fits with IGAÕs mission to be Ôhow the locals like itÕ. We will cater for inner city people who are seeking great branded products, excellent service and unique ambience in a store, and to top it off they can even get a coffee from our in-house barista”, he added.

The gourmet convenience format features a wide selection of gourmet cheese, meat, Australian certified organic foods – the vast majority of which are sourced from local producers. In addition to traditional deli offerings there is an extensive selection of organic and gluten-free products.
