How Subway grew and grew

Fred DeLuca started up the Subway sandwich chain with just $1000. Now the business is the world’s largest restaurant chain.

In 1974 DeLuca began to franchise the sandwich store concept and within eight years had reached 200 outlets.

In an interview with Burt Helm and Inc. magazine, DeLuca sums up the key to Subway.

“I tell everybody there are only three things that we do. We build sales at the store level, we build profits at the store level, and we build more stores,” he said.
