Flood waters don’t stop essential supplies for IGA supermarkets

The IGA supermarket network in New South Wales has been supported through the wet weather by the distribution arm of the business. IGA Distribution has ensured essential supplies reach the outlets despite the flooded roads.

In the biggest flood disaster since 1974, more than 9,000 people have so far been evacuated.

Wagga Wagga in the Riverina is one of the worst areas affected, with flood waters peaking at 10.6 metres at the centre of the town in Murrumbidgee River, while Forbes in Central West NSW also faced rising waters.

None of the independently owned IGA supermarkets in these affected regions have suffered any serious flood damage but IGA Distribution (IGA>D) has had to work with the Roads and Traffic Authority, State Emergency Service teams and local mayors, to ensure that the stores are still able to receive stock deliveries.

Severe floods in North West NSW throughout February affected the IGA supermarkets in Lightning Ridge, Walgett and Collarenebri.

IGA>D resorted to flying in more than 40 pallets of stock into the stores in these areas, with the support of the State Emergency Service and the Royal Australian Air Force.

Distribution manager Paul Maraziotis said “The team at IGA>D have been working around the clock to adjust logistics and distribution strategies to assist our retailers across the state, to support their local communities, and ensure they do not run out of essential commodities during the floods.”
