There is a new Australian Standard for electric vehicle (EV) service and repair.

Included in the framework are workshop layout, specialised tools, and protection equipment.

CEO of Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA), said the guidance is welcome as the sector readies for transition to EVs.

Stuart Charity said “Our industry is committed to national standards, and the implementation of the revised AS 5732 standard is an important resource for workshops.”

EVs still require service and repair

Reporting the news in February, Charity said the transition to EVs will mean training, investment and new workplace practices.

“There is an urban myth that the EVs can run forever with no technician involvement, but this is not the case. Like Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles, EVs need servicing, and EV vehicle components encounter wear and tear,” he said.

Both types of car have certain elements in common. These include electric diagnostics, safety systems sensors, brake systems, suspension componentry, windscreen glass, wiper components, air conditioning and tyres.

The new standard is AS 5732 Electric Vehicle Operations – Maintenance and Repair.
