CouriersPlease – an affordable, high-potential business opportunity

Since the eCommerce boom, CouriersPlease (CP) has been growing rapidly. In 2020 alone, the company doubled its network of Franchise Partners and opened several new depots across the country. Last year, CP delivered more than 28 million parcels, and anticipates this number will continue to increase this year.

“As we’re a national business owned by Singapore Post, international cross border delivery is another area of opportunity for us,” says CEO Richard Thame. “In a nutshell, we’re expanding fast.”

It follows that CP is actively seeking new Franchise Partners.

“Some people think that means we’re looking for delivery drivers, which isn’t the case,” Thame says. “We want people who are really serious about growing their own business.”

Opportunities go way beyond building a network of customers.

“The business doesn’t have to be limited to one van,” Thame says. “If you have a particularly large customer and need a truck, or if that customer requires a high level of account management, we can help with that. And, as we’re a territory-based franchise, there’s an opportunity to sell part of your territory and realise the capital gain. These splits come about when a Franchise Partner has either brought on a lot of new customers or as a result of demographic changes, such a growth in the number of apartments or a new business district.”

Franchise Partners can also build up the value of their business.

“That way, when you do decide to retire or move on to something different, your business is worth more than you paid for it,” Thame says.

Supporting growth

CP is an established and recognised brand, which means customers are often the ones to initiate the relationship.

“They come to us looking for a solution, so we provide our Franchise Partner with those leads,” Thame says. “We also recognise that our people are busy on the road every day so we have a team of Sales Reps they can rely on for help.”

Other sales support ranges from traditional flyers and business cards Franchise Partners can distribute in their own territory to automation programs that make it easy to build and take care of a customer database.

“I think one big difference between us and many other businesses in the delivery sector is our focus on technology,” Thame says. “In the future, we see ourselves as a business that relies very heavily on a technology platform to help Franchise Partners become more efficient and able to provide even higher levels of customer service.”

Already, technology is offering a solution to the demands of the October to December peak.

“We’re passionate about ensuring our Franchise Partners can provide the same levels of service to their customers all year round,” Thame says. “That means bringing in extra labour – and now a uni student on vacation or someone looking for a few weeks’ seasonal work can plug into our technology platform and operate efficiently from pretty much their first day.”

An affordable option

CP offers the option of an affordable business – an entry-level territory costs around $25,000. At the other end of the scale, an established and flourishing territory could cost several hundred thousand dollars.

Either way, overheads are very low – the only requirement is a late-model van. CP also offers continuing training with financial, HR and marketing support, plus access to a Franchise Advisory Council which gives Franchise Partners an opportunity to provide feedback and have a say in changes made to the business.

“We have also introduced a new, easy-to-understand onboarding system,” Thame says. “This helps new Franchise Partners to understand CP processes and technology much faster, increasing productivity and opportunities for success.”

The first thing CP looks for in a Franchise Partner is the right attitude.

“A CP franchise won’t suit everyone but it can be very rewarding for anyone who is genuinely happy to work hard and enjoys building relationships with customers,” Thame says. “We also look for good communication skills, energy and an understanding of technology with a willingness to learn. If that sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you.”
