The right skills for the brand: Judy Campbell

Sarah Stowe

Judy Campbell sought to take control of her own life, however she wasn't sold on establishing a business from the ground-up.

She was impressed by the track record of the Jim's group, and given her background in banking and bookkeping, Judy soon realised the Jim's Bookkeeping division was a great fit.

Today she heads up a Jim’s Bookkeeping franchise in Bundaberg East, Queensland, and deals with primarily small business owners.

Tell us a little about your work life before becoming a franchisee.

When the children were small I created small home operated businesses in areas of telemarketing, worm farming and childcare.

When they went off to school I decided I needed to return to the workforce, so it was back to accounts receivable where I was an all-rounder responsible for receivables, payables and inventory.

I enjoyed the work, but it always felt like someone else was in control of my everyday life. When the company grew too big and employed extra staff I decided that was enough for me to bite the bullet and do something else.

What brought you to invest in a franchise?

As a single mum with two teenagers in high school I needed the support as failure was not an option – it was a big leap of faith giving up a very good salary to increase my mortgage considerably with no immediate income – I needed to fast track getting a business branded and up and running with the least amount of hiccups.

The Jim’s method was proven and I listened to and learned from other franchisees, and particularly my franchisor to start building the brand in my area.

What skills did you bring to the business?

Bookkeeping knowledge, a passion to succeed and motivation, plus I am a people person.

What has been the biggest challenge as a franchisee in a new field?

Support from other divisions.

How has the franchisor helped you gain confidence in your business?

Through mentoring, the provision of ongoing support and a genuine concern for me as a person.

What will you do with your business and new-found skills?

I love to help other business owners grow their businesses – I don’t like just crunching the numbers as I want to be instrumental in their success. Testimonials have shown that this is what they value the most.
