The Colonel has unveiled plans for a world-first, announcing a new KFC drive through only store Down Under.
The innovative pilot concept will launch in Newcastle and sees five new lanes decked out with a wealth of technology designed to drive speed and efficiency of service.
KFC is investing around $1.5m in the new drive-through only store, the first of its kind in the world and follows significant growth in the brand’s e-commerce efforts.
Over the past five years, the fast-food giant has reported a 100 per cent increase in online ordering through its app, year on year. As pressure mounts on franchise chains to compete with delivery platforms, KFC is banking on technology to drive market growth.
Kristi Woolrych, KFC Australia CMO, said that the evolving nature of the fast-food industry has placed greater emphasis on full-scale customer experiences, and brands must innovative to adapt.
“Drive Through Only is the latest example of KFC’s commitment to innovation, and to giving Aussies the most delicious and fresh chicken possible,” Woolrych said.
“We’re dedicated to continually building on our customer offering, that we’re always providing delicious and fresh meals, in the most convenient way to meet their busy lifestyles.”
KFC drive through only store
The new KFC drive through only store will see customers offered two methods of ordering. Fans can either order via the franchise’s app or at one of five new high-tech kiosks, before driving through.
By reducing time spent at the ordering booth, Woolrych said the KFC drive through only store will provide customers with a seamless experience.
Drive through only customers will enter a unique four-digit code generated by the smartphone app on a touchscreen receiver, which will send their order to the kitchen where it is freshly prepared, ready for collection.
KFC’s technology push
According to the franchise giant, the $1.5m investment in the KFC drive through only store pilot is part of wider technology overhaul planned for Australia.
Earlier this year, KFC unveiled voice ordering through Amazon’s personal assistant Alexa, as well as partnering with delivery service Menulog.
Construction of the KFC drive through only restaurant in Newcastle started in late June and will be open to the public in early November. Pending a successful trial, the concept has been earmarked for potential nationwide rollout.
