Franchising expo ideal for Aussies who want to be their own boss

The Franchising & Business Opportunities Expo has a proud history of helping Australia’s dynamic franchising and small business industry.

“Small business is the driver of our economy and many people find it offers a fantastic lifestyle and steady income,” says exhibition manager Fiona Stacey.

Over the past 35 years the expo has provided enthusiastic would-be business owners with the opportunity to meet franchisors face-to-face.

Last year a report by NAB revealed that 41 per cent of Australians would choose to open their own business.

And according to NAB’s latest Monthly Business Survey (March 2023) business confidence is on the rise, aligned to strong demand.

“Conditions are generally strong across states and sectors,” said the bank’s chief economist, Alan Oster.

Keen visitor attendance at the expos last year backs this up. This year there are two shows visitors can attend, in Melbourne and Sydney.

The upcoming expo in Melbourne features 100 exhibitors across retail, food, fitness, home or business services, education, logistics and accommodation.

There is an impressive line-up of brands participating. Exhibitors include Amber, Appliance Tagging Services, Aramex, Bedshed, Celebrity Ink, CouriersPlease, Gelatissimo, Grayson’s Gutter Guard, Jamaica Blue, Jim’s Group, Kumon, Muffin Break, Ogalo, Pack & Send, Poolwerx, Quest Apartment Hotels, Signarama, Studio Pilates, Sushi Sushi, Tax Assist Direct, The Drug Detection Agency, The Lott by Tatts, and Xpresso Mobile Cafe.

With a broad cross-section of franchise brands representing so many different industries, there could even be a surprise business that sparks a passion!

“Visitors are often inspired by business ideas in industries they had never even considered,” Fiona reveals.

Want to be your own boss?

The expo is effectively a one-stop-shop for the franchise buyer. It is the perfect location to kickstart your franchise journey or get closer to signing the deal on your ideal business. It brings together franchisors, franchisees, legal and financial professionals and industry bodies; they are all on hand to help the visitor find the business of their dreams.

“It’s important to do some research online, but nothing can replace meeting real people who can explain the ins and outs of their business venture,” says Fiona.

Visitors love to hear from franchisees about what it’s really like to run your own business. And franchisees are keen to share their experiences to help others make the right decision about buying a business.

“Hearing from franchisees in person gives a great insight into the challenges and opportunities of owning a franchise,” says Fiona. “They are very frank about their experiences – what has worked well for them, and what hasn’t!”

Visitors can attend free seminars

Visitors keen to boost their understanding of franchising can attend any of the daily free seminars that are part of the expo. It’s a brilliant way to hear from experts in franchising and learn strategies to help build a successful business.

Seminar session topics include: conversations with franchisees, is franchising right for you?, what makes a winning franchisee, how to pick a winning franchise system, the importance of communication in a franchise and let’s talk about money – five facts you need to know about franchising.

A visitor highlight in the Melbourne seminar program is the opportunity to hear from Jim’s Group founder Jim Penman.

There is also a dedicated Start Your Own Business Workshop held on Saturday and Sunday morning from 9 am. In this two-hour workshop visitors will gain valuable and practical insights into starting a business. Topics include business registration, legal requirements, insurance, market research, risk management and creating a business plan.

Tickets for the workshop cost just $25, and the fee includes entry to the expo.

The Melbourne Franchising & Business Opportunities Expo is a jam-packed two-day event on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 May, 2023. The event is held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre from 10am to 5pm.

“Whether you are an experienced small business owner or just thinking about a new start, you will find everything you need to start or grow a business here,” says Fiona.
