Premium support built in for Snap-on’s mobile retailers

Sarah Stowe

The Snap-on Tools brand is a quiet performer in B2B retail, driving its premium range of mechanics’ tools in customised trucks right to the customer’s door.

This mobile retailer, relatively unknown outside the mechanic industry, has a strong heritage, launching in Australia back in 1989.

However, the brand’s origins stretch even further back, to the US in 1920, when an engineer from Milwaukee invented interchangeable socket wrenches.

The collection of five handles and 10 sockets, which coined the expression ‘Five do the work of fifty’, was a game changer for mechanics.

Over the years, the premium quality products have grown to an astonishing 85,000 distinct items, grounding the brand as a leader in the tools arena; Snap-on has even supplied tools for NASA.

Franchisees are well-equipped with tools, and support

The brand has a global reach, thanks to its impressive array of tools and a robust franchise system that delivers excellent support for its more than 4,800 franchisees.

Franchisees operate one or more trucks, fitted out with the latest tools and diagnostic technology, and service a regular clientele of professional mechanics who work in areas as diverse as automotives, aviation, defence, the marine industry and transport.

While the heart of Snap-on is innovation and top-quality products, there’s also a strong focus on ensuring franchisees are well-equipped, not just to deliver the service that maintains the brand reputation, but to build their businesses.

For some franchisees, running one truck is the dream lifestyle, delivering a good income and a work life balance.

More ambitious franchisees have developed their business with assistants and additional trucks to service even more clients.

While these franchisees are working for themselves, they are not alone. There’s training and ongoing support from the franchisor, and with a network across Australia and New Zealand, there are opportunities for franchisees to connect as a peer group.

Communications, training and connection at conference

The franchisor support and franchisee connection comes together perfectly at conferences; Reload, the mid-year conference, is a particular favourite with franchisees.

Russell Hafey, national sales manager for Australia and New Zealand, says “The conference is a great example of the lengths Snap-on is going to bring the network together to providing coaching, support, and communication. Our connection to and training with our network is at the heart of our business model.

“To be honest, it is something I am not sure any other franchise brand in the country would put on an event like this or as often as we do, without outside vendor support,” Russell says.

So, what’s on the agenda at a Snap-on conference?

“We will cover a mix of product training, inventory forecasting assistance, business training, and communication on the overall brand direction.

“And to wrap it all up at the end of the day, we even put on a nice social event and make sure everyone has had a great experience,” Russell explains.

For long term Victorian Franchisee, Andrew Fiek, the Reload conference is a must-attend event.

“From the product presentations, the sales workshops, the guest speakers, to the social events and catering, it’s a great event which keeps getting better.

“Most importantly, you get to network with everyone from the office support staff to the managing director, and catch up with your fellow franchisees from all around the country. It’s a very well put together mix of business and fun times that I look forward to every year.”

A recap of the year past, and a look into the future

It’s an ideal space to hear about upcoming plans too, says New South Wales franchisee, David Sarno.

“The Reload meeting each year has so many benefits for franchisees, with the 2026 meeting at Royal Randwick being no exception,” David says. “The meeting provides us with the opportunity to hear from the management team in person.”

It’s a recap of the year-to-date and a look ahead at plans for the remainder of the year.

There’s a hands-on practicality to the event as well, with franchisees able to place orders and plan for the back end of the year and the start of the following 12 months.

There’s no doubt though that the learnings and friendships nurtured at the conference are invaluable to franchisees.

David sums it up, saying “It provides the opportunity to socialise with fellow franchisees both during the tool show and at the post show event. I have made many excellent professional and personal relationships and by far my favourite part of any Snap-on conference is the time to catch up with my mates from across Australia and New Zealand.”
