Top Trends in the Fitness Industry

Sarah Stowe

The fitness industry has changed markedly in recent years. Not just in people’s level of engagement, but in the variety of ways in which they can do so.

Perhaps most notably, the growth of the 24 hour gym continues apace. The ability to train whenever you choose, day or night, maximises the customer base. And given the vast array of different time commitments people have, it’s a concept grounded in good sense.

Swipe card entry and remote security means lower staffing and a more efficient business model. Not to mention increased customer satisfaction.

As fitness becomes an increasingly competitive pursuit – complete with social media one-upmanship – people are seeking out the most efficient means of getting fit and strong in a short space of time. This has given rise to high intensity workout movements like Cross Fit, in all its various incarnations, with participation rates exploding in the past five years.

Similarly, all-around fitness and agility is back in vogue since parkour emerged from the French underground into the mainstream. Static gym routines designed purely for aesthetics are seemingly on the decline.

The proof is in television shows such as American Ninja Warrior and the popularity of local events such as Tough Mudder. With the latter, however, it is as much about the sense of community it builds as the workout itself. Obstacle courses provide an added dimension to getting fit – a puzzle to solve as well as sheer physical exertion.

Whatever the upcoming trends or how the current ones evolve, the fitness industry shows no sign of waning. The demand for and uptake of professional fitness services is growing substantially.
