What’s driving Zarraffa’s newest franchisees?

The franchisees of Zarraffa’s newest drive through store at a petrol station on the Gold Coast have turned their love of coffee into a new business opportunity.

Husband and wife team Dimity and Handley Jones already own a Bank of Queensland franchise and picked Zarraffa’s Coffee as their next business initiative because of the brand and the products.

“I’m a huge fan of the coffee”, said Dimity Jones. “But ultimately we understood it was a smart business investment having witnessed the success of our friends who own another drive through store.

“It’s the best of both worlds; combining our love of coffee, with a highly successful franchise model that has a proven track record.”

Jones said the opening of the store is something they have been pursuing for the past two years with the idea of making it a family affair with their grown children, including son Llewellyn who is profoundly deaf.

“We will be looking to promote a diverse range of staff to create a dynamic team,” she said. Jones, who will run the store, has experience as a senior manager, and is a trained nurse and migration solicitor.

“We feel a responsibility as small business owners to recruit staff based on what they can offer a business and we understand the benefits gained by encouraging team diversity.”

Petrol station locations

The new Tugun site is also the first to open as part of the company’s push to ‘bookend’ drive through stores with high visibility, high traffic convenience sites and petrol station locations.

CEO Kenton Campbell believes the Matilda Petrol station site is the perfect marriage of convenience and accessibility and one which will prove a test case for future leasing models.

“Our expansion plans are not simply about populating the country with Zarraffa’s Coffee stores but rather geared toward creating profitable and sustainable businesses for our franchisees, with greater ease of access for coffee drinkers,” he said.

Campbell said the Tugun outlet (the company’s 53rd store) is a prime example of the joint ventures with landlords  which will prove a model for future development.

“We are interested in talking to retailers and landlords who hold convenience locations of all shapes and sizes.

“Our drive through model is adaptable; from the four window, double sided ‘super drive through’ to a free standing version and we are on the lookout for available land for lease, purchase or any other combination. It all comes down to location.”

Jones agrees. “Our position on the Gold Coast Highway is ideal and makes for an exciting opportunity to operate a drive through store attached to a service station and, with the internal access for fuel customers, will allow us to serve even more people.”
