Travel trends for 2023 reveal visitors likely to spend on meaningful trips

International travel is on the up. But what’s driving the trend?  Two surveys, in the US and Australia, confirm that purpose and a wish-list of destinations are important factors in travel next year.

A trend report by Newscorp Australia reveals that as a result of increased interest in booking international travel intrastate visits are declining. However interstate travel continues to be popular. The report found 97 per cent of Australians believe it’s important to take a break.

The report lists four travel trends for the first six months of 2023.

Dollars and sense

Value for money is important for Aussies, but not at the expense of safety and security. That means better margins for those businesses who can deliver on a promise of ease and safety.

The big thrill

Longer trips are now the currency of travel, particularly for the youngest generation of holidaying Australians who are happy to spend more of their dollars on extended visits. In fact 25 per cent of Gen Zs are seeking a bucket-list holiday. Newscorp suggests expert advice is now in high demand, an opportunity for travel businesses to build brand loyalty.

Meaning and purpose

Travel is not just about having a holiday – it’s about a meaningful experience. Sustainability and inclusivity are increasingly important to booking decisions for Australia’s Millennials and Gen Z.

And for Aussies heading overseas, spending more time in one place to enjoy local culture is more important than ticking off a checklist of destinations.

Gen Z on sabbatical

This generation is looking for relaxation so sabbatical-style holidays, in a group, are prime options. Gen Z will use these holidays to not only to challenge themselves but to engage with small communities.

It’s important for businesses targeting this market to leverage their social media presence. Gen Z seeks suggestions and advice from travel influencers and viral travel content.

American Express survey

These trends are echoed further afield. A recent American Express Travel survey in the US found 74 per cent of respondents are likely to spend more on travel in 2023. And 70 per cent want to travel to wish list destinations next year.

Almost three quarters (74 per cent) want to holiday for their own wellbeing. Eighty eight per cent seek out local culture when they travel.
