McDonald’s, Pizza Hut among fast-food franchises making changes

McDonald’s and Pizza Hut are two major food franchises that are making changes to their menus through item additions, which is seen as an attempt to entice consumers.

The fast food industry is seeing a slight sales growth but it is widely due to higher, increased prices – not patrons eating out more frequently.

McDonald’s is adding a Green Apple Smoothie made with real fruit, yogurt and ice, and is about $2 for a small size.

Additionally, the Bacon and White Cheddar McMuffin is a tweak to the regular McMuffin. This new bacon and egg breakfast muffin with a small coffee is about $3.50.

Pizza Hut tweaked the Hot Dog Bites Pizza, which has been dubbed “pigs-in-a-blanket crust,” with 28 dough-wrapped bite-size hot dogs around a traditional pizza. Here in Australia mustard is drizzled on the pizza and the hot dogs are baked into the crust.

According to NDP group, a market research company, in 2014 people aged 18 to 24 made 33 fewer visits per person per year than people of the same age in 2007.

Industry professionals have claimed these changes are ultimately in a bid to garner more traffic to their stores.
