Hungry Jack’s ad taken off air

Hungry Jack’s has been forced to pull a radio advertisement off the air after the Advertising Standards Bureau ruled it promoted violence.

The ad promoted the brand’s $4.95 stunner value meal, and depicted a debt collector threatening and hitting a man because he owed someone $5, Ad News reports.

“You borrow that kind of money, you gotta be prepared for the consequences,” the man said.

The ASB said the ad featured “unjustified violence” and promoted the wrong message to consumers.

“This ad is clearly aimed at young people and uses violence as a natural consequence for not returning money,” it said.

Hungry Jacks defended the ad and said it was a fictional narrative that featured “slapstick humour”.

“No reasonable person would understand it to seriously suggest that Hungry Jack’s condones or encourages violence,” it said.

“It is in our view a gross exaggeration of what is in fact depicted in the commercial.”

Hungry Jack’s has agreed to comply with the ASB and the ad will be pulled from commercial radio.
