How one young couple found their work/life balance

Kane Marland and Tenelle Sweeney own two Amber stores in Sydney’s St George and Caringbah, and they have plans to secure additional sites.

The pair practiced thorough due diligence before they opted for Amber – Kane says it was important they understood what they were getting themselves into prior to investing.

How did you come to decide on this brand?

It was quite an easy decision that came about fairly naturally. I am a tiler and frequently used Amber as a supplier.

As my business started to grow I found myself supplying most of my clients with their products. I really liked Amber’s range and service so it was a simple decision to join the group.

How did you manage to finance the investment?

Tenelle and I chose to get our finances through a bank. It is important to do the financial research before diving into a business venture of this nature.

How has the franchisor training helped you in business?

The franchisor training was really invaluable. It allowed Tenelle and me to grow as business partners.

The training taught us how to think as franchisees and by doing so enjoy the benefits of being in and acting as a group.

What’s it like working with your partner?

It can be quite testing at times. But it is also great to have each other close every day. There are more positives than negatives.

How do you juggle your work and home life?

It’s a juggling act and you have to lay down the rules from the beginning. Work stays at work and home life stays at the door.

What are your goals for the business and for yourselves?

The goals for the business are to expand from one store to two or three. We have just purchased our second store and are looking forward to moving on to our third store in the future.

Our personal goals are to have some time off work!
