ATS franchisee peer performance

How a top ATS franchisee is helping boost peer performance

Sarah Stowe

Appliance Tagging Services franchisee Daniel Carabott prides himself on spotting great opportunities, and being bold enough to take them. That’s what brought him to the test and tag business and led him to spend nearly 12 years as a high-performing franchisee.

So when he was offered the chance to spend two to three days a week helping out fellow franchisees in a training, technical and auditing role he jumped at the opportunity.

“In the last couple of years I’ve been contracted a few days a week to ATS while still running my own business. I saw it as a way to transition off the tools,” Daniel explains.

Taking the new role also enabled his assistant Paul to take on more responsibility, something that has proven invaluable now Daniel is working full time with the franchisor.

Peer performance now a focus for ATS franchisee

“In September 2024 I had the opportunity to come across in a full time position. It was time to do something different and move away from the physical elements of the job,” he says.

Daniel’s personal experience as a franchisee is invaluable in his new role as franchise development and performance manager. He is responsible for franchisee operations across the country.

He brings a franchisee perspective to the franchisor, understanding what is realistic and what is unrealistic on the franchise front line.

And he can fully appreciate the franchisor’s standpoint now he is part of the head office team.

“It’s brilliant – now I have a real insight into both sides of the business!” he says.

Appliance Tagging Services is a specialist in test and tag, safety switch testing and essential safety services. Franchisees provide electrical safety assessments and fire protection services.

Compliance and customer service are key

“In this role I’ve learned more about the compliance aspect and why certain decisions are made. I can see what happens when things aren’t actioned. We’re in the safety industry and we have to be on top of the compliance,” Daniel says.

Sometimes he tells franchisees they need to work around the problem to find a solution – which might not be ideal, but will achieve results.

To be a successful ATS franchisee requires rigorous compliance and excellent customer service.

“To have a valuable and high performing franchise they need to enhance everything else as well. When you’re on site, 100 per cent customer service.

“I was always a good franchisee, and I’ve been a top performer since I started, so I’ve got a proven history that helps when I’m talking with franchisees.

“My strength is customer service and how I deal with people. I am direct but respectful, and my directness gets my point across,” he says.

Sharing expertise and experience

After 12 years out on the road servicing corporate and small business clients, Daniel is happy to work predominantly from head office. He is still out and about running compliance audits or for state meetings.

Daniel is enjoying the new job so much he doesn’t mind the long drive to and from head office in Bentleigh.

His role gives him an opportunity to train new franchisees – and he is involved in the final stages of the franchisee selection process too.

Daniel still owns his ATS franchise, with Paul now managing it on a daily basis. But he is happy sharing his expertise and experience with up and coming and established franchisees in the network.

“I’ve been with ATS nearly 14 years, I enjoy the company and have a good relationship with the head office team and owners Ainslie and Sarah Allen.

“I’d like to work through to retirement with ATS. I’m really enjoying the role, it’s the best I’ve had!” he says.
