KFC ordered to pay up over salmonella poisoning

An appeal by chicken franchise, KFC, has fallen on deaf ears in the NSW Supreme Court, with the company now required to pay legal costs for a young girl who was left with severe brain damage after suffering salmonella poisoning.

In 2005 the girl, now 14, ate a chicken wrap purchased from a KFC outlet in Sydney’s Villawood. She contracted salmonella poisoning and has been left with severe brain damage, unable to speak and in a wheelchair.

Monika Samaan and her family took the franchise to court where it was ordered to pay $8 million in compensation.

KFC maintained its innocence throughout the whole case, officially lodging appeal submissions last week and requesting that the family cover the business’ legal costs, dating back to the 2009 hearing.

However, according the ABC, this appeal has been dimissed by Judge Stephen Rotham.
