Mick Unwin joined the Cold Rock brand in July 2011, and while he admits running a franchise takes a lot of time and dedication, the experience is no doubt life changing – in a positive way.
“The rewards that come with being your own boss are endless, and I wouldn’t change it for anything,” he says.
Mick had always wanted to be his own boss, so when the opportunity was presented to him via a Cold Rock franchise, he couldn’t say no.
“It wasn’t until my former business partner brought the first Cold Rock to Canberra that I thought about buying into the franchise with him,” Mick says.
“A year later we bought the Belconnen [Canberra] Cold Rock store!”
He chose Cold Rock because of the positive associations people have with the brand. “Cold Rock reminds me of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; it brings with it good memories,” Mick explains.
“I love seeing the faces of people of all ages light up when they see the ice cream and ‘mix in’ selection!”
Mick was not taken aback when he entered the business because he was well aware of the obstacles he may encounter while running the franchise.
“I knew from the start it was going to be a challenge. However, since being in system for the past three years I have learned how to prioritise my time more effectively,” he says.
Mick describes his day-to-day as a balancing act as he oversees the store while simultaneously holding down a job in the public service.
“I have a fantastic manager who helps with the day-to-day duties of running the business, and my wife, my father and I ensure the strategic goals of the store are met.”
In addition, he is constantly devising new and unique ways to draw customers to the store.“[I] activate regular and fun activities for the community to be a part of, and keep abreast of current trends. This helps us to… deliver a great offering!”
The business is no doubt a family orientated one, with Mick, his wife and father Stephen all involved.
“Managing roles can be tricky, but we’ve made sure that each of us has set responsibilities. [This] ensures we’re all on the same page and everything is smooth sailing.”
Mick praises the team at head office for the training and support they offered while he was learning the ropes, and for the support they continue to provide.
“The team is really flexible and has continued to encourage our activation of different ideas and activities – like the portable store and the ice cream eating challenge we’re currently promoting,” he says.
Mick is passionate about his franchise, and will do whatever it takes to ensure it continues to perform.
“It’s very important to set goals in your business plan – short term, medium term and long term. I am very future focused and hope to continue growing our business at a great rate,” he says.
“With my dedication and enthusiasm, and the help of the Cold Rock team, this is definitely achievable!”
